Background Story
Hi, I’m Judy Silva, founder of Lookup Homeschooling. Like many parents, I began homeschooling with a heart full of faith—and a lot of questions.
I’ve spent over 25 years teaching and working with children in various volunteer and educational settings, and more than 10 years homeschooling my own children. Alongside that, my professional background includes 25+ years in accounting, computers, and business administration, including serving as a senior corporate computer trainer. I hold a college diploma in Business Information Systems, a field closely aligned with Business Administration.
While homeschooling, I quickly discovered two major challenges.
The first was the lack of Canadian-focused homeschooling content. While I’m grateful for the many U.S.-based resources available, I felt strongly that Canadian families deserved curriculum and courses that reflect our country, our context, and our history.
The second—and even more personal—was realizing that my original approach wasn’t working. I tried the traditional model: sitting still, worksheets, workbooks… and frustration followed. Through prayer, the Lord gently reminded me to teach my children the same way I had taught others for years—creatively, actively, and with purpose.
As I shifted my approach—drawing on my experience teaching, coaching baseball, and horsemanship—homeschooling became more joyful. Learning went deeper. Confidence grew. And our days changed.
What I also noticed during this journey was something rarely addressed:
👉 Parents are expected to teach—but rarely taught how to teach.
There are countless courses for students, but very little support for parents to learn teaching techniques, approaches, and practical strategies they can actually use at home. That gap is why Lookup Homeschooling was created.
The name Lookup comes from Psalm 121:1–2—a reminder that we don’t homeschool alone. We kneel, we look up, and we trust the Lord for wisdom, strength, and guidance.
